My mother, Betty John, on a University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire Zoology field trip to Skibbereen in 1936. Betty was born in 1915 and brought up on a farm near Cefn Mably. She studied Biology at Cardiff 1934-37 and trained as a teacher in London. In the mid 1950s, after my brother and I were born, she was head-hunted back into teaching and pioneered science teaching for girls at Secondary Modern level. Submitted by Madeleine Gray.
